Master Compositing in Blender
My Online Course with CG Boost
Last update: 10th April, 2025
Helping to train a new wave of creatives is something I’ve always wanted to and finally, thanks to my time with CG Boost (an online education platform), I’m finally able to do that. I often find that compositing is seen as a very niche topic in VFX, despite the broad applications it has. Hopefully this course will help change that in some up-and-coming artists.
As a professional compositor for major film studios, digital compositing is something with which I am very familiar, so this particular subject was an obvious choice when I was asked to make a course for CG Boost. In it I cover a wide variety of topics, designed to give those unfamiliar with the techniques involved a great first step in learning how to utilise compositing.
In the production of this course, I made several fairly extensive sci-fi scenes, designed to cover every topic the course has to offer, from colour grading and simple filter effects like vignette and film grain, to more advanced techniques like keying (green-screen) and camera tracking. Images from these scenes can be seen below.
I also had the privilege of working with my friend, Ashley Mears, who was kind enough to be the willing subject in the footage designed for green-screen keying. I am hoping he appears in dozens of portfolios and showreels for years to come.
This is a project I’ve been working on for approximately 3 years now, and I’m pleased to say that it is now available to the public via CG Boost’s website. There is still a small chunk of work to complete on it, with the final planned update expected to be completed some time around mid-2025, but I’m very happy that all the work I’ve done so far is finally seeing the light of day.
